Notes for myself on personality types and how they form relationships, data data data. I've sorted my character voices into what I think are their appropriate personality types. All my Darrow pups are there, as well as some prior headvoices still alive, and some I'm hopeful to play in the future.
A very interesting activity for my own uses.
INTJ
Spock - Star Trek, Temari - Naruto, Barnaby Brooks, Jr. - TIGER&BUNNY, Gregory House - HOUSE, MD, Tres Iqus - Trinity Blood
For the INTJ everything has a scientific base so getting close would be difficult initially, as they don’t see the need for emotional connection. Their engagement tends to come via intellectual arguments with like-minded people. For INTJs emotion doesn’t compute and so they may not understand their impact on others or indeed gauge the emotional reactions of others, which can make them appear as insensitive or a little cold. INTJs are private and can often be naturally impassive as well, which makes them easy to misunderstand. INTJs want people to make logical sense and so feelings are difficult for them to fathom. INTJs are intellectually curious and love complex problems and analysing data to and come up with unique solutions, driven more by concepts and abstract ideas than by the emotions of people.
The INTJ is often impervious to their environment as they are deep and private and love getting their heads into complex problems. They love the intellectual robust debate and won’t really ‘see’ conflict. For the INTJ it is about creating something new and worthwhile and this will be their focus. They won’t really see the emotional issues and will work at a more cerebral level where they are more comfortable. INTJs work more at an intellectual than emotional level and so would see conflict, if they did engage, as simply an extension of the debate and their arguments would be well thought through, based on data. As the INTJ inhabits an internal world of complexity, ideas and possibilities, working towards conclusion, any conflict would simply be seen as part of that process, enacted then it’s time to move on.
The emotional reactions of other people can be difficult for an INTJ to gauge and they may therefore appear to others as insensitive and cold and to staff as neglectful of their ‘people’ responsibilities. The INTJ is a perfectionist and may also find it difficult when other people or projects etc do not come up to their high expectations and standards. This can make them seem a little superior and so some people may love it if they trip up, but this would be unusual for the INTJ. INTJs are generally extremely private people, and can often be naturally impassive as well, which makes them easy to misread and misunderstand. Perhaps the most fundamental problem, however, is that INTJs really want people to make sense. Although quietness pervades, the INTJ is capable of being a real chatterbox - but not in general or small talk - only on issues which are important to them or which stimulate them. When an idea is fully formed (until it is the INTJ would prefer not to speak of it), the INTJ is prone to wax lyrical about it even to the extent of becoming an expert bore!
ESTP
Robin Goodfellow - The Cal Leandros Series, Natsu Dragneel - Fairy Tail
The ESTP is the fun-loving, adventurous, gregarious individual who will be the life and soul of the party - until their boredom levels kick in and they will be off looking for the next big adventure. The ‘S’ factualness goes strangely with the ‘P’ which means that they will want to quickly get as much sensory experiences as possible, all that can be fitted into one day, then the ESTP will need the next fix of excitement. The ESTP is family oriented and will protect and support those close. However they do not like to be constrained or bored or (worst of all) told what to do.
Constantly in a rush to move onto something more exciting, the ESTP may forget the ‘niceties’ of considering how other people are feeling. This is not due to not caring, it is more about not noticing as the blur of moving from one interesting, sensory experience to the next holds their attention.
Being so practical and action oriented the ESTP will want to jump in and solve problems, which is what they’re built for, impervious to their environment which means emotions don’t really feature. The ESTP will easily share their thoughts, factually and directly but will not really see the need for emotions, as they would not really help get the job done or the problem fixed. They need that constant feed. The ESTP draws great energy from moving swiftly from problem to problem, coming up with practical solutions and moving on. They are great company, friendly and chatty, but don’t really ‘get’ emotions.
ESTPs love a good conflict. Not to hurt or to be self-aggrandising but because it creates the right honesty and tension to get the problem fixed more quickly. Being impervious they rarely take offence. The ESTP does not like a slow or steady pace and will want to make sure everyone is doing stuff rather than thinking. Their low boredom threshold means they don’t want to be constrained or told what to do. Direct and economic with words, the ESTP will tell it like it is and expect others to do the same. The robust debate helps them get it done more quickly but those more reflective might find it a bit brutal. Once it’s over, for the ESTP it’s over and they will have moved onto the next big thing. They don’t bear grudges or reflect deeply preferring to sort it out and move on to where the next action is.
ESFP
Okumura Rin - Ao no Exorcist, Bolin - The Legend of Korra, Jiraiya - Naruto
ESFPs are life loving, fun loving people-centric thrill seekers, with a real caring side and a desire to offer practical, emotional help. They throw themselves into relationships and will be positive to be around. ESFPs are so expressive and giving, always there in a crisis when people need them yet there is a far more emotional side which means that the ESFP can also easily get hurt.
Although chatty, open and very expressive the ESFP will keep their own private feelings to themselves and you may be surprised to find that what you see is not the whole picture as the ESFP may be very talkative but they are not so keen to share more private, personal information. There is a more reserved side but only those allowed close would see this. The ESFP is driven by a desire to help and to please and they need to know they have made a tangible contribution as they struggle with complexity and anything they perceive as convoluted, ethereal or woolly. In a crisis, the ESFP will be there, taking charge, offering support, revelling in their ability to help, loving the drama with their energies and infectious enthusiasm.
The more sensitive side means that the ESFP will take criticism very personally and to heart, and they do not like conflict, seeing their job as to bring peace and harmony. The ESFP will not allow conflict to occur and they will use their incredible likeability and charm to make sure that conflict is nipped in the bud early so that harmony is restored and people are happy. ESFPs will be excellent at diffusing tension in difficult situations as they find confrontation uncomfortable and their need for immediacy mean they just have to jump in and sort it all out right now. For the ESFP there is a difference between conflict between themselves and other people, they take as personal criticism, and conflict BETWEEN other people, which they love to resolve.
In personal relationships the ESFP may spend so much time looking after others that they may struggle with their own, personal difficulties as they rarely rely on any objective evidence for decision-making and so they can be taken advantage of. They will, however at all times look on the positive, and a defining characteristic is the strong ability to ‘bounce back!’
ENTP
Urahara Kisuke - BLEACH, Lafayette Reynolds - True Blood, Nagisa Kaworu - Neon Genesis Evangelion, Killer Bee - Naruto
A low boredom threshold characterises ENTPs in all aspects including relationships. They need the different, the exciting the new, the novel otherwise it becomes workaday and the ENTP will become bored and need some sort of new ‘fix’ to hold their interest. The ENTP moves from one exciting situation to another and this is where they derive their immense energy. ENTPs are capable of enthusing, energising and making people feel really special. They are also capable of moving on quickly when the situation does not provide the feed they need. The ENTP is often confused with the ENFP because of their people skills and ability to charm, cajole, persuade and get what they want from others. People will want to be part of their gang. However in the cold light of day the ENTP displays the ‘T’ characteristic and will be pragmatic decision-makers using only empirical data, evidence and logic to decide, again maybe to the surprise of those who believe the ENTP to be basically a ‘people-person.’ Sure they are, but decisions are based on evidence not emotion.
The ENTP is so plausible because they believe what they say. This is not to say they are untruthful, it is more that they mean what they say at the moment they say it but they do genuinely move on and keep changing. To understand where an ENTP is coming from it is best to check in often and then it is possible to see the thought patterns. The ENTP may be difficult to keep up with but it will be an exhilarating and memorable journey. The ENTP is very closely attuned to their surroundings and constantly looking for opportunities and possibilities which will feed their strong desire for something new.
The ENTP is happy with conflict as it allows them to sharpen their debating skills and engage in verbal sparring. They will not really engage at an emotional level seeing it all as an interesting game. Winning the debate is very important to the ENTP and so they will want to be proved right. Telling an ENTP they’re wrong is like throwing down a gauntlet, one they’ll be delighted to pick up. For all their people skills and verbal abilities the ENTP is at heart an analyst and their way will be to use logic, rational argument and empirical data to enjoy the debate and win the day. The ENTP low boredom threshold means that when conflict occurs it is over and they move on. They tend not to bear grudges or ever look back as there are so many more exciting opportunities to come.
INFP
Remus J. Lupin - Harry Potter, Kurosaki Ichigo - BLEACH, Ginko - Mushi-shi, Gimel - Burying the Shadow, Ryuudou Yukiatsu - Ghost Slayers Ayashi
The INFP displays contrary qualities: gentle and caring, yet crusading, social and supportive, yet private and difficult to know. The INFP values most those who take the time, trouble and effort to really get to know them. Only those who are allowed through the INFP 'assault course' will get genuinely close. To others the INFP will seem like a gentle enigma. The INFP will often display their reactions to their feelings, rather than their feelings, and may bottle things up which then leak out at strange moments thus adding to the 'difficult to understand' image. It is essential for the INFP that their beliefs and their actions are totally in sync at all times. An INFP is unlikely to take any action which they don’t believe in their heart is right.
Objectivity is difficult for the INFP as INFPs feel things, really FEEL them and so to step back and give an objective appraisal of a situation or a person is hard because the INFP will consider these in relation to their own values and these are very difficult to understand as they are so personal. They will take things to heart and any criticism will be taken very personally and seriously, seen as a personal affront and so wound very deeply. Rather than take issue with the person, the INFP will invariably store their feelings up and they will fester and then leak out.
So serious can this be that the INFP may, rather than bring the issue up later, simply drop the offending person from their life-space. The INFP has a tendency to idealise relationships and so may be disappointed when others don’t measure up.
Curious yet shy, INFPs love to know what's going on, feel excluded if not kept informed but do not like to be the centre of attention, shunning the limelight. INFPs are incredibly emotional, indeed they can actually feel what others are feeling and this can even stay with them. They are tuned in and insightful and they are happy to deal with the emotions of others.
INFPs have a deep desire for harmony and balance and will prefer to see the good in people, focusing on the positive issues and the interconnections between people rather than with the negatives. For a type so caring and gentle there is a surprisingly crusading side to the INFP. When a personal value is trodden on, the INFP can become uncharacteristically outspoken and champion of the cause. The INFP does not like conflict and will seek to be the one who brings harmony, diffusing tension and seeing things from the other person’s perspective, excellent supporters and empathetic friends. Conflict, aggression or even extended people interaction will sap the energy of the INFP who will need to disappear back into their own inner sanctum, reflect deeply on how it made them feel and recharge.
ENFP
Uzumaki Naruto - Naruto, Kotetsu T. Kaburagi - TIGER&BUNNY, Peregrin Took - The Lord Of The Rings, Hugo Reyes - LOST
The ENFP values close personal relationships based on trust and mutual respect. Because the ENFP is so talkative and outgoing, it could be assumed that what you see is what you get. However, there is a more sensitive individual underneath who can be hurt easily. Because the values of the ENFP are so internalised, it may be possible to transgress these without realising it. Their lack of closure - the unwillingness and inability to ‘close doors’ extends to people too and the ENFP will be the ultimate networker, maintaining friendships and staying connected for many years. Perceptive, insightful and helpful the ENFP will be excellent readers of people and will be loyal and caring friends.
Warm, caring, spontaneous and concerned about others, ENFPs have very strong personal values upon which they base their decisions. They are committed to their friends and will move mountains to help someone in distress. Having an ENFP in the team will ensure that the mood is kept light, that everyone feels valued and that the ideas will flow freely. In personal relationships ENFPs have a great deal of people-centric charm, which makes them likable even to more formal, serious characters, despite their unconventionality. They are outgoing, fun, and genuinely like people. As friends they are warm, affectionate and disconcertingly spontaneous.
Optimistic and hopeful, the outgoing and cheerful nature of the ENFP belies a more sensitive soul who can take criticism to heart and who needs to be liked. They are outgoing, fun, and genuinely like people. ENFPs are emotional people who tend to be at the heart of dramas. Their genuinely caring nature means they will ensure that the mood is kept light, that everyone feels valued and that the ideas will flow.
An ENFP will project such warmth and will have no problem being open. However their values are so important and these are internalised so it may be possible to inadvertently hurt the ENFP. The ENFP cannot help but see possibilities. Future oriented they will look far beyond the obvious often seeing things that others fail to, driven by the new, the complex, the interesting and caring for people.
The ENFP does not like conflict and will be the one at the heart of the action bringing peace and understanding. Warm, affectionate and disconcertingly spontaneous people will like and trust the ENFP. ENFPs are by nature very caring and they do not like seeing anything they perceive as unfair or unjust. However their style is to bring it all together in harmony, rather than go into battle.
As the ENFP is comfortable with emotions they are fine at using emotional language and being tactile and people will tend to open up to them and this allows conflict to be resolved amicably. For the ENFP it will depend on if the conflict was resolved and was everyone happy or did the person who was upset get over it. It is because they don’t like conflict that they’re great at diffusing it.
INFJ
Abel Nightroad - Trinity Blood
Getting emotionally close to an INFJ will be difficult, take some time and indeed may never happen. The INFJ world is so driven by values, by a complex belief system that it is difficult for outsiders to ‘get in,’ unless invited. Even then trust will be a process, not an event and once given will be seen as something precious and can thus be taken back as easily, if the INFJ perceives someone as having transgressed a precious value. Serious minded and intense the INFJ will take relationships as seriously as they do their causes and their global outlook and focus on the big picture may mean that it is difficult to always get on their wavelength. Acutely suspicious about others' motives, INFJs are not easily led. These are the people that you can rarely fool any of the time. Though affable and sympathetic to most, INFJs are selective about their friends. Such a friendship is an important bond that is not to be taken lightly.
An INFJ's values have been honed over some time, deep within their own heads, and they may not be happy to share these. This can make it difficult to get close and may mean that other people see them as a bit strange or quirky. The INFJ would not see the need to alter this view and will generally work quietly until a value is transgressed. The problem is that INFJs are so complex, individualistic and un-forthcoming, that the other person may not realise that some value or deeply held belief has been transgressed and be quite surprised how sharply the INFJ can react and how outspoken, assertive and stubborn they can suddenly and uncharacteristically become.
Although at times strident and outspoken, INFJs are true introverts, who can only be emotionally intimate and fulfilled with a chosen few from among their long-term friends, family, or obvious ‘soul mates.’ While instinctively courting the personal and organisational demands continually made upon them by others, at intervals INFJs will suddenly withdraw into themselves, sometimes shutting out even their close friends.
This apparent paradox is a necessary escape valve for them, providing both time to rebuild their depleted resources and a filter to prevent the emotional overload to which they are so susceptible as inherent ‘givers.’ As a pattern of behaviour, it is perhaps the most confusing aspect of the enigmatic INFJ character to outsiders, and hence the most often misunderstood, particularly by those who have little experience with this rare character type.
Although quite gentle, and preferring to be out of the limelight, the INFJ will work long and hard behind the scenes to maintain harmony but they are also intensely independent - both of thought and spirit. This is a necessary escape valve for INFJs providing both time to rebuild their depleted energy and a filter to prevent the emotional overload to which they are so susceptible as inherent ‘givers.’
Because the INFJ is basically private, they will fight only on issues that really mean something to them and thus they can switch from being quiet to incredibly crusading, assertive and stubborn. All interactions, given the nature of the INFJ as champion and supporter, will eventually deplete their energies and they will need to recharge on their own, thinking deeply about issues and connecting the dots.
ISTP
Spike Spiegel - Cowboy Bebop, Tamahome - Fushigi Yuugi
Since people rarely conform to laws of physics the ISTP may struggle with interpersonal issues preferring the rationality of scientific experiments to the irrationality of mere mortals with all their foibles, idiosyncrasies and irrationality. The ISTP is intensely practical and the subtleties of emotion will be lost on them. They will also be quite private regarding their own personal lives and walk away from conflict, not from fear but as it is just so unproductive! However this means that others may therefore see them as thick-skinned and uncaring.
Getting close to an ISTP would take time. This is not because they are shy or threat sensitive, it is more that they want to reveal details about themselves at their pace, in their way. Therefore other people may have to go through the ISTP assault course to get genuinely close. The ISTP does not like anything irrational, and emotion is irrational and so they will try to break problems down to constituent parts which may irritate those that ‘just want to be understood.’ The ISTP is a confident introvert, happy with themselves and do not feel the need to show emotion, or even feel emotion as everything gets analysed and stored factually. They genuinely want to help and to solve problems, but these will be solved by dispassionate analysis which may leave those close to them feeling processed, rather than understood.
ISTPs are equally difficult to understand in their need for personal space, which in turn has an impact on their relationships with others. They need to be able to ‘spread out’ both physically and psychologically which generally implies encroaching to some degree on others’ space, especially if they decide that something or someone else's is going to become their next project. (They are generally quite comfortable, however, with being treated the same way they treat others at least in this respect.)
Communication also tends to be a key issue, since they generally express themselves tersely or even non-verbally. When they do actually verbalise, ISTPs are masters of the one-liner, often showing flashes of humour in the most tense situations and this can result in their being seen as thick-skinned or tasteless.
ISTPs tend to be either full on or full off. They can be passive bystanders until something grabs their interest or a practical problem needs fixing and then they take over, fix it, and withdraw loving the buzz. Although friendly the ISTP is more practical and factual and so may not understand emotions. They tend to break things down to constituent parts and do not like anything they see as irrational. The ISTP is quite closed to emotional issues. It does not make them uncaring but sharing feelings or intuiting how others are feeling doesn’t really compute with their scientific nature. At their heart ISTPs are thrill seekers and will love to be where the action is. However once they have jumped in and experienced they will tend to go back to being passive and quiet.
ISTPs love difficult situations and they will see conflict as something, like everything else, to be fixed then move on. They do not seek conflict but are impervious to their environment so it goes with the territory. Intensely practical the ISTP will only want to get the problem solved or the issue addressed, practically and as quickly as possible. Personal feelings matter only insofar as they relate to what needs to be done. The ISTP tends to be economic with words and a little terse in their communications. This is not rudeness just a desire to get everything resolved and so they will have no problem getting to the point. As ISTP’s are factual and living for the moment, any conflict will just be a small part of getting the problem fixed (which energises them) and then if it becomes chitchat their energies will deplete. They need action.
INTP
Mohinder Suresh - Heroes, Miles Straume - LOST, Ruby Rose - RWBY
The INTP is very independent, deep and private yet can at times seem totally outspoken because of their directness of communication and economy of words speaking only when there is something to say. INTPs find emotion difficult as they are at heart logical, analytical and objective with no time for anything they see as 'fanciful.' The INTP will find it difficult to share their feelings, although they will be blunt and outspoken regarding their thoughts. In moments of single-minded concentration, the INTP will appear aloof and detached. Sceptical and difficult to know the INTP is wary of close emotional involvement as emotions tends to be slightly outside their own life-space and if someone gets too close too soon they close down.
The INTP may have trouble with emotional individuals as this 'does not compute,' they being so logical, analytical and objective with no time for anything they see as 'fanciful.' An INTP would not be motivated by someone saying, 'please,' or by emotional pleading. Rational argument, logic and intellectual theory are the routes to the ‘heart’ of the INTP who will have no problem taking the hard decision, as long as it is the 'right' decision, one based on logic and evidence. INTPs are relatively easy-going until something violates a principle. Then they can become outspoken, inflexible and unreasonable, switching from reserved to actually enjoying the heated drama. Blunt and to the point, the INTP will rarely let emotions get in the way and will use logic and data to make their point. Those who are more emotional may find them at such times a little cold and harsh. As they are more deep and private the INTP will happily debate, using all their intellectual and logical abilities, before withdrawing back to their own world, not hard feelings, no feelings at all, it was a chat. However it may surprise some who have been on the end of the INTP logical bluntness, succinct and exact, (and at times bone-jarringly honest and brutal) that generally they prefer to quietly keep their own company only projecting emotion when a deeply held belief is transgressed and even then, brutal as it may be for that very short space of time, they will soon withdraw to their introverted world of deep, complex logical considerations, leading to more INTP ‘laws of physics.’
In times of low energy, or moments of single-minded concentration, the INTP is aloof and detached in a way that might even offend more relational or extraverted individuals. This makes the INTP very difficult to know as they will tend to be very sceptical and wary about close emotional involvement as emotions tend to be slightly outside their own life-space and if someone gets too close too soon they may find that the INTP ‘closes down’ and focuses only on rational issues. This means that the INTP may not pick up on the verbal and non-verbal cues and thus tread on toes or fail to notice another person’s feelings and can therefore be seen as slightly cold or harsh. Strong emotional impulses, which they do not understand can cause problems for the INTP.
ISFJ
Julio Richter - Marvel 616 Universe
Sensitive, kind and caring, (in a very practical way), their at times over-accommodating nature means that the ISFJ may be taken advantage of. It isn’t so much that the ISFJ is worried over confrontation because when a value is transgressed the perpetrator may get an uncharacteristic verbal lashing, surprising those who thought that quiet and shy meant weak and fragile. Values and feelings are at the heart of who the ISFJ is as such are not to be treated lightly. It is more about their need to give, to support and care for that means they may get taken for granted.
They are also very deep, thinking deeply and long and hard about issues, taking them seriously and often fretting unnecessarily about the small things. The ISFJ has a tendency to catastrophise and see the worst situation, their glasses are often half empty. However this does help protect others from undue risk-taking or haring off in the wrong direction.
It is more about the very private nature of the ISFJ and any confrontation may allow others ‘in,’ something which would make the ISFJ very uncomfortable. The ISFJ will share their thoughts and feelings with only a very few other people, and indeed anyone revealing such information, however innocently, will have transgressed the ISFJ ‘unwritten law of personal disclosure’ and the ISFJ will ‘henceforth’ withdraw all trust from that person. However the ISFJ will often be the unsung hero in an organisation and a little appreciation and respect goes an awfully long way.
ISFJs are deep and caring with strong values and these will be held privately until the ISFJ allows people in. What others will perceive is a helpful, supportive, patient and detailed individual who is under the radar. The ISFJ is sociable but doesn’t like the spontaneity of crowds. The ISFJ is an emotional type, but may struggle at times to deal with these, as they are so private and reflective. It may be possible to deeply offend an ISFJ and not realise it, so private are they.
Once allowed close the ISFJ will open up but it will take time and they are not naturally forthcoming. This may mean it emerges in small chunks, often off the back of other conversations. ISFJs have a strong sense of what is right and wrong and will tend to do what they believe is right, even at the expense of themselves. They really do want to support, care and are generous with their time.
The ISFJ will initially close down on conflict as they prefer harmony and indeed will work hard at creating that. Indeed the ISFJ will be a superb diffuser of conflict but they themselves do not enjoy it. ISFJs are often called ‘the defender’ and this is because they will stand up for what is right and the rights of others. So whilst they may shun conflict personally, they will fight for other people. Naturally more quiet and low key, the ISFJ will be conciliatory and seek consensus preferring to see good in people and they will look to get to a resolution that makes everyone happy. Altercations and over interaction in general sucks the energy of the ISFJ and so they will need some private ‘me’ time to recharge their batteries and build up their energy levels.
It may be telling that I am a strong ENTP myself, whups.
Shall refer to this with interest in the future.
A very interesting activity for my own uses.

Date: 2014-04-13 11:01 pm (UTC)I am excite to play her though I tend to play central protags and there are fewer female central protags in general, so my roster tends to skew toward the boys unless I do a lot of apping into large canon casts.
UGH I LOVE GIMEL THOUGH.
